"Heather Kenyon's scenic design exploded with color and personality, creating a world that felt every bit as joyful as the characters inhabiting it."
- AJ Jaffari, Broadway World
"The set, by Heather Kenyon, sets a mood that fits the double-edged nature of the show: a surface of fun, cheery music, set against a backdrop of prejudice and bullying. There are several false prosceniums painted in comic book colors with black graphics that echo the upstage backdrop, a depiction of Baltimore row houses. Kenyon also created an array of set pieces that roll in and out to help establish the locations where the story takes place."
- Patrick Thomas, Talkin' Broadway
"Heather Kenyon employs four, arched, color, stage frames with hints of the neighborhoods of Baltimore embedded throughout in a set design whose elements quickly convert to a cramped, dingy apartment; a snazzy TV stage; a jail full of angry women, and more."
- Edie Reynolds, Theatre Eddys
